Porto, Portugal
The Alfândega do Porto is a historic customs house built in the mid-19th century along Porto’s Douro River to manage and store goods coming through the city’s port. Designed by French architect Jean-François Colson, its architecture combines neoclassical elements with industrial design, symbolizing Porto's importance as a commercial hub.
Over time, as Porto’s trade practices evolved, the customs house was repurposed. Today, it functions as the Alfândega Congress Centre of Porto, hosting cultural events, exhibitions, and the Transport and Communications Museum. This transformation has turned the Alfândega into a vital cultural space, linking Porto’s rich history with its contemporary urban life.
